Six places to start with

Skuleskogen National Park
Sweden's 19th national park, from 1984: about 30 km of marked trails, three entrances and the Slåttdalsskrevan canyon.

The High Coast Trail
A 135 km signature trail through the whole World Heritage Site, in nine sections. It starts (or ends) right in the town centre.

Ulvön
Once the largest fishing village in Norrland: red boathouses, a chapel from 1622 and surströmming history. Passenger ferries only.
Varvsberget
The town's own mountain, with views over the centre and the harbour, downhill bike trails and Lake Hörnsjön halfway up.

Paradiset water park
Adventure pool and spa with Magic Eye, Sweden's longest water slide. A good pick for rainy days.

Skuleberget
The world's highest coastline, 286 metres up. Hike to the top, take the cable car or climb the via ferrata. Naturum High Coast is at its foot.
Getting here
- Train. SJ runs direct trains from Stockholm Central; the journey takes about 5–6 hours by day, and there is a night train. Regional Norrtåg trains link Örnsköldsvik with Sundsvall and Umeå. Book SJ at sj.se; Norrtåg tickets can be bought on board.
- Car. About five hours from Stockholm on the E4, which crosses the High Coast Bridge on the way.
- Coach. Y-buss runs from Stockholm to Örnsköldsvik.
- Air. Scheduled flights between Örnsköldsvik Airport and Stockholm Arlanda were suspended in June 2026. Check oer.se for the latest, or fly to Umeå, Sundsvall-Timrå or Höga Kusten Airport and continue by train or rental car.
Getting around
The town centre is walkable, and the High Coast Trail starts right in it. Local and regional buses are run by DinTur and are cashless – pay by card on board. To see the smaller places along the coast, a car is easiest; Höga Kusten's travel page lists rental and taxi companies.

Frequently asked questions
Is it Örnsköldsvik or Övik?
Both. Örnsköldsvik is the official name; locals almost always say Övik. The town was named after the county governor Per Abraham Örnsköld.
How do I get to Örnsköldsvik from Stockholm?
By train is easiest: SJ runs trains from Stockholm Central to Örnsköldsvik, and the journey takes roughly 5–6 hours by day. There is also a night train, and Y-buss coaches. By car it is about five hours, mostly on the E4.
Can I fly to Örnsköldsvik?
Örnsköldsvik Airport (OER) has scheduled flights to Stockholm Arlanda when an airline operates the route. The route was suspended in June 2026, so check oer.se for the current situation. Umeå, Sundsvall-Timrå and Höga Kusten Airport in Kramfors are alternatives.
